12 NDFB(S) militants arrested in Assam's Chiang district

Guwahati, Jan 11 (IBNS): Security forces on Sunday arrested 12 hardcore militants belonging to NDFB(S), including nine top leaders of the militant group, in Assam's Chiang district along the Indo-Bhutan border who were involved in the recent massacre in Kokrajhar and Sonitpur district that left more than 80 people dead.

Assam police IGP of BTAD Dr LR Bisnoi said that, police, SSB and CRPF had jointly launched operation at three remote areas along the Indo-Bhutan border and arrested the militants.

Security forces also recovered huge cache of arms and ammunition in possession from them.

"It is one of major back through for Assam police with arresting 12 hardcore caders of NDFB(S) including nine top leaders of the extremist group," Dr Bisnoi said.

Among the arrested militants nine are the most wanted extremists in the list of Assam Police and police had earlier announced cash reward against them.

The top police official said that, security forces recovered four AK-56 rifles, one point 303 rifle, one point 315 rifle, five pistols, four grenades, 12 magazines and 784 rounds ammunition in possession from the militants.

Earlier, police had apprehended seven hardcore militants of NDFB(S) in Kokrajhar district.

On Saturday, one of the most wanted extremist of Assam Police Jeblang alias Jagat Basumutary, platoon commander of NDFB(S) was killed during an encounter with security forces in Kokrajhar district.

Security forces  intensified operation against militants in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Indo-Bhutan border led by army and Assam police.
