NIA court clears Assam MLA and jailed activist Akhil Gogoi of charges under UAPA in one anti-CAA protest case
Guwahati: Jailed activist and newly elected MLA Akhil Gogoi on Tuesday was acquitted in one of the two cases filed against him by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for his alleged involvement in violence during the anti-CAA movement in Assam in December 2019.
The National Inestigation Agency (NIA) had filed two cases against Akhil Gogoi – one from Chabua police station in Dibrugarh district and another from Chandmari police station in Guwahati for his alleged involvement in criminal activities during anti-CAA protests under various sections of the IPC and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Amendment Act (UAPA).
The NIA court on Tuesday did not frame charges against Akhil Gogoi in Chabua police station case.
Akhil Gogoi who is the president of Raijor Dal, was arrested in December 12, 2019 from Jorhat for his alleged involvement in anti-CAA protests in the state.
In April this year, Akhil Gogoi was acquitted in the Chabua police station case, but the NIA had appealed again.
Gogoi’s advocate Krishna Gogoi said that, after hearing in the Chabua police station case the NIA court discharged Akhil Gogoi and two others as the central agency failed to prove their guilty and charges were framed against Gogoi’s third associate, but not under UAPA.
“Hearing on the Chandmari police station is on and Akhile Gogoi has not got bail in this case,” the advocate said.
Akhil Gogoi was elected to the Assam Legislative Assembly from Sivasagar constituency by contesting from jail.
