Navi Mumbai airport name tussle: Ahead of gherao, roads to CIDCO Bhavan blocked

Thane/UNI: All the roads leading to the CIDCO Bhavan have been barricaded following the gherao announced by the groups demanding the naming of the new  Mumbai airport after Dinkar Balu Patil, police said on Wednesday.

Speaking on this, the DCP (Traffic) Purushottam Karad said, “The traffic on the Mumbai-Pune highway between Kharghar and Belapur has been regulated and diverted.”

“No vehicles movement will be allowed in the vicinity of the CBD between 8.00 a.m. and 8.00 pm on June 24,” he apprised, adding that security has also been beefed up in the area.

Swift actions were taken anticipating that more than one lakh people, including the locals and the PAPs, will rally to the CIDCO Bhavan on Thursday which is the birthday of Patil.

After the under-construction airport was named after Shiv Sena founder late Bal Thackeray, an all-party committee has been formed to oppose the move.

The committee leaders, prominently Dashrath Patil, are strongly demanding to rename the facility after D B Patil as he spearheaded the cause of PAPs.

In the same regard, the committee met CM Uddhav Thackeray but the discussion went futile. To placate the agitators, Minister Eknath Shinde also proposed to name another mega project after Patil.

However, the idea was turned down by the committee and the impasse over the issue continues.
