Two al-Qaeda terrorists arrested in UP planned attacks, suicide bombings in crowded areas of Lucknow
Lucknow/IBNS: The two al-Qaeda terrorists arrested from Uttar Pradesh's Kakori town on Sunday planned terrorist attacks - including suicide bombings - in crowded areas of Lucknow and other cities in the state, said media reports.
The arrested terrorists have been identified as Minhaj Ahmed and Maseeruddin, also known as Mushir - both residents of Lucknow district, said an NDTV report.
"ATS (Anti-Terrorism Squad) UP has uncovered a big terror module. The team has arrested two terrorists linked with Al Qaeda's Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind. Arms, explosive materials have been recovered in searches," ADG Law & Order Prashant Kumar said at a news conference.
"The terror activities were being run from Peshawar and Quetta on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border," he added.
A pistol and explosives were recovered from the house of Minhaj Ahmed, who is in his thirties, in Kakori town of Lucknow district, police said, according to the report.
A large amount of explosives and two pressure cookers were recovered from the house of Maseeruddin, who is aged about 50, and lives in Mariahu town of Jaunpur district, the report further said.
Prashant Kumar later said the arrested duo had human bomb training.
The duo will be produced before the court where police will request their custody for interrogation.
The group also had people from Lucknow and Kanpur, the police said, adding that Minhaj and Maseeruddin were the key people in the unit.
