New Delhi/UNI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended greetings on the occasion of Guru Purnima on Saturday.

"Hearty greetings to the countrymen on the auspicious occasion of Guru Purnima," his tweet read.

This day is dedicated to the unique relationship between teachers and their students in line with the traditional guru-shishya parampara. Today students pay respect and remember their teachers.

Guru Purnima is also known as Vyasa Purnima after Veda Vyasa, who wrote the epic Mahabharata.

It is celebrated on the full moon day in the month of Ashadh, the third month in the Hindu calendar. This festival also marks the beginning of Chaturmas or the four auspicious months dotted with festivals across the country.
