Himanta Biswa Sarma says Assam police keeping a watch on Taliban sympathizers
Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday said the Assam police are keeping a watch on Taliban sympathizers in the state.
“Assam police have arrested those people who show violent intent in their social media posts. Many people are in watch list of the Assam police,” Himanta Biswa Sarma said.
He further said these posts are not in support of Taliban but they had supported arms struggle.
“Assam is a very sensitive state. So, we requested to avoid sensitive posts in social media which could spread communal tensions. Some people didn’t listen to us, so we have arrested them. I am very happy that even the Muslim community of Assam has supported those arrests,” the Assam Chief Minister said.
“Assam is a very communally sensitive state, because 35 percent people in the state are belonging to religious minority and 65 percent people belong to majority community. There are many districts where minority community people are almost 70 percent. We have to maintain a delicate balance,” Himanta Biswa Sarma said.
The Assam Chief Minister said, “So, we have requested that, for some event which has happened outside the jurisdiction of this country, there is no need to post either hailing or otherwise. We have to keep communal harmony in intake.”
“We have arrested some people and many people are in watch list. We have not arrested everyone. We have brought them to the police station and counseled them. They have deleted the post and gone back. We have arrested only those people who show violent intent in their social media posts,” Himanta Biswa Sarma said.
Assam police have so far arrested 16 people, including police personnel, religious leader, student, from across the state for alleged social media posts supporting the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan.
