Govt approves 9 judges, including 3 women, for Supreme Court

New Delhi/IBNS: The government has approved the names of all the nine judges recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium for appointment as judges of the top court.

The nine judges include three women. The Centre has forwarded the names to the President for his approval.

The judges are likely to take oath on August 31.

Justice BV Nagarathna, of the Karnataka High Court, is in line to become the first woman Chief Justice of India.

PS Narasimha, among the judges to be elevated to the Supreme Court, is also in the line to be the Chief Justice of India.

The Supreme Court has 24 judges against the sanctioned 35 and after the new appointments only one vacancy will remain to be filled.

Reports said that it is probably the first time that nine names have been recommended and all have been approved by the government.

The names include eight judges and one lawyer from the Supreme Court Bar.

They are :

Karnataka High Court Chief Justice AS Oka
Gujarat High Court Chief Justice Vikram Nath
Sikkim Chief Justice JK Maheshwari
Telangana Chief Justice Hima Kohli
Justice BV Nagarathna of the Karnataka High Court
Kerala High Court Judge, Justice CT Ravikumar
Madras High Court Judge, Justice MM Sundresh
Gujarat High Court Judge Justice Bela M Trivedi
Senior Advocate PS Narasimha.
