Assam boat accident: Police arrest six persons, detain three others
Guwahati/IBNS: Police have arrested six persons and detained three others in connection with the boat capsize incident that took place in the Brahmaputra river at Neamatighat in Assam’s Jorhat district Sept 8.
Confirming the report, Jorhat district Superintendent of Police (SP) Ankur Jain said that, Jorhat police have so far arrested six persons and Majuli district police have detained three others.
“We have arrested six persons and Majuli district police have detained three others,” Ankur Jain said.
The arrested people were identified as Jogen Das, Dhanbar Das, Biju Kumar Das, Jayanta Dutta, Binod Baruah and Babul Neog.
He further said that police have summoned a few others including the owner of the ill fated boat.
Jorhat police have registered a criminal case following the directive of Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), a total of 92 passengers were on board when the boat named Maa Kamala capsized in the Brahmaputra river after it collided with another boat which was coming from the opposite side.
“89 passengers survived and two people died and one person is still missing,” said in the statement of ASDMA.
A 30-year-old college teacher identified as Parimita Das was died at Jorhat Medical College and Hospital on Sept 8 and the body of the second victim, Indreshwar (Jaan) Bora was recovered on Saturday from Bhasa Tapu area near Umatumuni Island of Biswanath district.
NDRF, SDRF and river police teams are engaged in search and rescue operations to locate the last missing person in different locations.
