Guwahati: A 19-year-old girl was not allowed to sit for an entrance examination as she was wearing shorts at an examination centre at Tezpur in Assam’s Sonitpur district.

She then wrapped curtain around her legs to sit the examination.

The incident took place at Girijananda Chowdhury Institute of Management & Technology, Tezpur where this year’s Agricultural Entrance examination was held on September 15 which was conducted by Assam Agriculture University (AAU).

According to the reports, 19-year-old Jublee Tamuli was travelled along with her father from Biswanath Chariali to Tezpur to sit for the entrance examination.

Jublee said that, there was no hitch as she entered the examination venue, but trouble started while she was on her way to enter into examination hall.

“The authorities had allowed me to enter into the examination venue after conducting proper check. When I was on my way to enter into the examination hall, an observer asked me to wait sideline while all other students were allowed to enter the examination hall. I had all my documents including admit card, Aadhaar card, photocopy, but they didn’t check my documents and told me that short dresses are not allowed. I asked – Why? It is not mentioned in the admit card, then they told me that you have to know. How can I become to know, it was not mentioned in the admit card,” Jublee Tamuli said.

Jublee further said, "why a girl can’t wear short dress, has it any valid reason?"

“Is it any crime by wearing short dress? Many girls wear short dresses. If they don’t want then it should be mentioned in the admit card. When I requested the observer that my father wants to talk to you, he refused it and lastly they asked my father to bring a pant. My father rushed to market and when my father didn’t able to bring a pant, during that time two girls brought a curtain and asked me to wrap the curtain. Later I appeared in the examination by wrapping the curtain,” Jublee said.

Jublee further said that, it was most humiliating experience of my life.

On the other hand, Dr Abdul Baquee Ahmed – Principal of Girijananda Chowdhury Institute of Management & Technology, Tezpur, said that, the entire examination was conducted by the Assam Agriculture University.

“We had provided our classrooms and other technical, logistical supports to them. They outsourced our institution and used the institution just as an examination venue. Even the observers, invigilators were from outside,” Dr Abdul Baquee Ahmed said.

On the other hand, Assam Agricultural University Vice-Chancellor Dr Bidyut Chandan Deka said that, a committee of AAU will visit the college to inquire about the incident.
