Hope Amarinder Singh works in interest of party: Ashok Gehlot

New Delhi/IBNS: Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Sunday urged his colleague and former Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh to "continue working keeping the party's interest above everything else".

Commenting on the present crisis of Congress in Punjab, Gehlot in a tweet said the party's high command only takes decisions based on feedback from MLAs and the public, and leaders must think in the interest of the party.

"Captain Saheb is a respected leader of the party and I hope that he will continue to work keeping the interests of the party ahead," Gehlot tweeted in Hindi.

"The high command sometimes has to take decisions in the interest of the party on the basis of feedback received from legislators and the general public. I also personally believe that the Congress president chooses the Chief Minister only after hearing many leaders," Gehlot said.

"In such times, the responsibility of all Congress leaders increases in the interest of the country. We have to rise above ourselves and think in the interest of the party and the country," he added.

Punjab is likely to get a new chief minister on Sunday as the Congress called a meeting of its MLAs for the second time in recent days, media reports said.

This comes after Captain Amarinder Singh resigned as the Punjab CM on Saturday after being asked by the party's central leadership.

After tendering his resignation to the governor, the Congress leader said he resigned as he was feeling "humiliated".

A meeting of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) held on Saturday evening was attended by 78 out of 80 MLAs, who unanimously passed two resolutions - on thanking the outgoing chief minister Amarinder Singh, and the second asking party president Sonia Gandhi to choose his successor.

Singh resigned amid infighting with state Congress president Navjot Singh Sidhu.

According to media reports, more than 50 MLAs had written to Sonia Gandhi demanding that the "Captain" be replaced as Chief Minister.

After tendering his resignation, Singh told the media: "I feel humiliated by the way talks transpired. I spoke with the Congress president this morning, told them that I will be resigning today."

"I am currently in the Congress party. I will discuss with my supporters and decide the future course of action," he had said.
