Babul Supriyo resigns as Lok Sabha MP

New Delhi/UNI/IBNS: Singer-turned-politician Babul Supriyo, who recently joined Trinamool Congress, on Tuesday formally tendered his resignation as Lok Sabha MP.

He was earlier a BJP MP.

Supriyo on Tuesday met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla here and resigned as MP from Asansol parliamentary constituency.

In his resignation letter to the Speaker, the former BJP leader urged to accept his resignation and bless him for his 'new journey."

He also expressed his gratitude to the BJP, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and party's national president Jagat Prakash Nadda for giving him the opportunity to serve the country under various capacities.

"It has been a very fulfilling seven years that I have spent in the Parliament and I shall always remain indebted to my now ex-party BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji, Amit Shah ji and JP Naddaji for giving me the opportunity to serve my country," Supriyo wrote.

On Monday, Supriyo hinted that he might contest from the Asansol parliamentary seat in the bye-election and said " If I have it in me, will win it again."

Supriyo, had won from Asansol seat twice in 2014 and 2019 general elections as a BJP nominee.

He had held various portfolios in the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre, before the last Cabinet reshuffle.
