Obama greets Pranab Mukherjee ahead of R-Day

New Delhi, Jan 24 (IBNS): Ahead of his visit to the Asian nation, US President Barack Obama has greeted Indian President Pranab Mukherjee on the occassion of the country's Republic Day.

In his message released by the Rashtrapati Bhawan, Obama said: "On behalf of the American people, I extend best wishes as you and the people of India celebrate India’s Republic Day January 26."

"The Republic of India has nurtured the world’s largest democracy since adopting its constitution 65 years ago, while honoring the country’s rich and diverse cultural heritage. As we work to deepen the ties between our great democracies and advance our partnership for the 21stcentury, we will continue to do so on the basis of the democratic ideals contained in our constitutions," he said.

Obama said it was an honbour for him to serve as India’s Chief Guest during the Republic Day celebrations.

"It is a great honor to serve as India’s Chief Guest during the Republic Day celebrations. Michelle and I very much look forward to returning to India, and once again enjoying the generosity, hospitality, and beauty that marked our last visit in 2010," Obama said in his message.

Obama and wife Michelle left for their three-day visit to India.

Obama will be coming to India on an invitation by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend this year's Republic Day parade.
