Cartoonist R K Laxhman passes away

Pune, Jan 26 (IBNS): Popular cartoonist RK Laxman, whose creations have been appreciated by people for generations, passed away in Pune on Monday, media reports said.

He was 94.

Laxman was admitted to a hospital for the past couple of days.

According to reports, he was put on life support when his condition deteriorated on Sunday.

Born on Oct 24,1921, in  Mysore, Laxman was  best known for his creations 'The Common Man', for his daily cartoon strip.

The strip had gained popularity over the years as he targeted politicians for more than five decades.

Apart from creating cartoons for newspapers and magazines, his creations also include the sketches drawn for the television adaptation of Malgudi Days which was written by his elder brother R K Narayan and directed by Shankar Nag.

Meanwhile, social networking sites are flooding with reactions as celebrities have expressed their thoughts on the death of the cartoonist whose works had become an integral part of every  Indian's life.

Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah tweeted: "India loses her preeminent Common Man. RIP #RKLaxman."

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said: "Saddened to hear that the legendary cartoonist RK Laxman passed away a short while ago. May his soul Rest in Peace."

Andhra Pradesh CM N Chandrababu Naidu tweeted:" Saddened to hear about the passing of legendary cartoonist RK Laxman. He chronicled Indian life & politics through eyes of common man."

The Aam Aadmi Party posted on its official Twitter account: "RIP #RKLaxman - The man who gave a face to the common man of India!"

The Congress party tweeted: "We mourn the sad demise of R K Laxman, one of India's greatest cartoonist Our deepest condolences to his family. "

Politician and former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot said:"My condolences on the sad demise of Padma Vibhushan awardee, Magsaysay laureate, eminent cartoonist RK Laxman ji.May his soul rest in peace"

Former Indian skipper Anil Kumble tweeted: "Eminent Cartoonist RK Laxman dies at 94! May God Bless his soul. RIP!"

Bollywood actor Riteish Deshmukh said: "RIP RK Laxman - a huge loss to us Mango People. #Respect #Legend."
