Dehradun/UNI: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday launched a scathing attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government at the Centre, accusing it of destroying the country’s 'unity' and 'economy'.
He asserted that the situation in the country was not the same as the previous government.
"It is very unfortunate, the country is being divided and weakened. People from the weak sections are targeted," said Gandhi in an apparent attack on the ruling dispensation, while addressing the 'Vijay Samman Rally' here, organised to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971.
Recalling India's victory in the 1971 war against Pakistan, the former Congress president said, "In the 1971 war, within 13 days Pakistan bowed down its head. India had defeated Pakistan because the people of the country irrespective of their religion and caste stood unitedly, while Pakistan was divided. There was a strong relationship between the government and the Army. Today, the situation in the country is not the same."
He exhorted the people to take a cue from the 1971 war and said that if the people of the country get united no powerful forces can stand before it.
Attacking Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the three farm laws, which were repealed by the Parliament recently, Gandhi said, "The three black laws were brought by the Centre to benefit two-three industrialists, not the farmers. The PM had apologised to the country and said he had made a mistake after the farmers protested. This was not a mistake, but a 'conspiracy'."
He also slammed the government over demonetisation, Goods and Services Tax (GST), unemployment, price rise and Covid pandemic.
"Demonetisation and GST were the weapon of some industrialists and Narendra Modi ji was the implementer. These were the biggest attack of these industrialists to common people of the country, specially small business, farmers and labourers. This government has destroyed the economy of the country," Gandhi said while addressing the mammoth gathering.
On unemployment, the Congress leader said till the BJP government will remain in Delhi, no youth of the country can get employment.
Recalling his attachment with Uttarakhand since his childhood, Gandhi got emotional and said, "There is a relationship of sacrifices between you and mine.
The sacrifices that thousands of families in Uttarakhand made as they lost their loved ones who died for the country, same was with my family. My grandmother (former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi) and father ( former PM Rajiv Gandhi) sacrificed their lives for the country."
Uttarakhand is slated to go for Assembly polls, along with UP, Manipur, Goa and Punjab early next year.
