BSF foils smuggling bid, kills Bangladeshi man

New Delhi/UNI: The Border Security Force (BSF) shot dead a Bangladeshi man early on Wednesday when a group of Indians and Bangladeshis tried to smuggle narcotics into Malda district in West Bengal.

The incident took place at around 1:40 am on Wednesday at a border post Nawada in Malda.

A group of Indian and Bangladeshi smugglers forcefully tried to smuggle contraband items and encircle BSF troopers and attacked them with bamboo sticks and stones, the paramilitary force tweeted.

A trooper tried to disperse them and fired stun grenades. But as the smugglers continued to be violent, the BSF opened fire in self-defence, leading to the death of the Bangladeshi, it said.

The dead man was identified as a resident of Dhoolipara in Bangladesh, six km from the international border.

A mobile phone and 197 bottles of Phensedyl were recovered from the site, the BSF said.
