Priyanka Gandhi Vadra slams Nirmala Sitharaman over FM's 'UP-type' remark

New Delhi/IBNS: Congress top leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has slammed Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman for calling Lok Sabha MP Rahul Gandhi's criticism of the Union Budget a "UP-type answer", days ahead of the elections in the north Indian state.

Criticising the budget, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday tweeted, "M0di G0vernment’s Zer0 Sum Budget! Nothing for - Salaried class - Middle class - The poor & deprived - Youth - Farmers - MSMEs."

When Sitharaman was asked about Gandhi's comment, the Finance Minister said, "I think he has given a typical UP-type answer, which is good enough for an MP who ran away from UP," referring to the Congress leader's defeat in the hands of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s Smriti Irani at Amethi in Uttar Pradesh.

Tearing apart the Finance Minister, Gandhi Vadra, who is in-charge of the Congress in Uttar Pradesh, tweeted, "Nirmala Sitharaman madam, you did not put anything in the budget bag for UP, okay… but what was the need to insult the people of UP like this?

"Please Understand, the people of UP are proud to be a 'UP type'. We are proud of the language, dialect, culture and history of UP."

In what could apparently upset the middle class ahead of crucial state elections, Sitharaman on Tuesday announced no change in tax structure but reduced the corporate surcharge besides stating Initial Public Offering (IPO) of state-backed Life Insurance Corporation of India is expected to hit the market soon in the Budget 2022.
