Bengal: Naseeruddin Shah, Ratna Pathak Shah support CPI-M's Saira Shah Halim who is fighting Babul Supriyo in Ballygunge

Kolkata/IBNS: Veteran Bollywood actor Naseeruddin Shah has come out in support of her niece and CPI-M candidate from West Bengal's Ballygunge constituency, Saira Shah Halim, who is taking on turncoat Babul Supriyo fielded by the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC).

Supporting Halim's candidature in an individual capacity, Shah said in a video message, "... family ties aside, I have always found her to be a courageous, committed, caring person of integrity who is always eager to help the less fortunate. She has been outspoken in her criticism of certain causes and a vocal defender of others..."

"So the choice before the voters of Ballygunge is a clear one. Would you like your representative to be a caring, compassionate and committed person who will work for you or would you prefer a turncoat, opportunist and also a serial hate monge," he added.

Shah's actress wife Ratna Pathak Shah too extended her support to Halim saying, "I hope we can rally behind her and help her come to power and make a difference in the lives of the young people in the country."

The bypolls in the seat became necessitated after it fell vacant due to the demise of TMC veteran Subrata Mukherjee last year.

In 2011, Halim's husband and CPI-M leader Fuad Halim had unsuccessfully contested from the Ballygunge seat in TMC bastion south Kolkata.

Supriyo, a former Union Minister in the Narendra Modi government, jumped from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to TMC after the 2021 West Bengal assembly elections.

The elections to both the seats will be held on Apr 12 and the results will be declared on 16th of the same month.
