“As Delhi votes today, urging voters to go out and vote in large numbers. I particularly call upon my young friends to vote in record numbers,” PM Modi tweeted.
The fate of the national capital will be only decided by over 1.33 crore electorates who will cast votes for 673 candidates in the fray for the Delhi Assembly elections. Voting is taking place at 12,177 polling stations.
Also an early voter was Kiran Bedi, 65, the BJP's presumptive chief minister, who tweeted as she set out to vote,
“The Sun God from my Window. Magnanimous for all, always. Giving me the Energy to Serve...Thank you,” Bharatiya Janata Party’s chief ministerial candidate for the Delhi Assembly Kiran Bedi said in a tweet. The BJP took up a huge gamble as they banked on Bedi to form the government in the national capital.
Sources said President Pranab Mukherjee, Vice-President Hamid Ansari, Union minister Harsh Vardhan and Sharmishtha Mukherjee, Congress candidate from Greater Kailash and the President’s daughter were among early voters.
“Everyone must please go out and vote after getting ready and offering prayers. Aapki zaroor jeet hogi,” said Aam Admi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal.
Earlier, the AAP had claimed that it would record a thumping victory to get 51 seats and form a new government. In fact several surveys also indicated the same.
The AAP, which conducted a survey, said party supremo Arvind Kejriwal is the most popular choice for the electorate. He would be the next chief minister of Delhi.
AAP leader Yogendra Yadav had said an internal survey of the party suggests that it is likely to win 51 of Delhi’s 70 seats. That assessment gives the BJP 15 seats and the Congress and others four.
Massive security arrangements have been made as 55,000 policemen have taken to the street on Saturday to ensure free and fair election in the capital. These policemen are deployed to carry out patrolling in sensitive areas. Senior police officers are also deputed to monitor the situation while 3900 CCTV cameras are used for surveillance.
The counting of votes to the 70-member Assembly will be held on February 10.
