Tamil Nadu: Three Sri Lankan Tamils arrive, seek refuge
Rameswaram: Three more Sri Lankan Tamils, including two children, reached Arichalmunai coast in Rameswaram of Tamil Nadu through an illegal ferry seeking refuge in India, on Wednesday.
Official sources said the Sri Lankans were identified as M.Varshini (37), and her two children M.Nainika (11) and M.Rangison (4) hailing from Batticaloa district in the Island nation.
Varshini and her children were dropped along the shores of Arichalmunai by a Sri Lankan fibreglass boat clandestinely for a sum of Rs two lakh in Sri Lankan currency.
After being interrogated by the Marine police of the Coastal Security Group (CSG), the Sri Lankan Tamils were lodged at the refugees' camp at Mandapam in Ramanathapuram district.
Spiralling prices of essential commodities, food shortage and other livelihood issues forced them to seek refuge in India, the sources added.
With this, 39 Sri Lankan Tamils of 10 families had arrived in Tamil Nadu so far seeking refuge owing to the economic meltdown in Sri Lanka.
