India records first sologamy as Gujarat woman Kshama Bindu marries herself

Ahmedabad: India witnessed its first  'sologamy' when Gujarat woman Kshama Bindu married herself at her residence on Wednesday.

She performed the unconventional marriage ceremony by following major Hindu rituals like 'mehendi' and 'haldi'.

She got married a few days ahead of the scheduled date to avoid any controversy after a BJP leader opposed her wedding and said she wouldn't be allowed to marry in a temple, reports India Today.

Meanwhile, 24-year-old  Kshama Bindu shared images of her marriage on Instagram which is now being followed by 27.8K followers.

Kshama Bindu's case grabbed attention as it is probably the first instance of 'sologamy' in India.

Speaking to reporters, Kshama Bindu had earlier said she wishes to break stereotypes with her decision and inspire others who are "tired of finding true love."

Bindu, who identifies herself as bisexual, earlier told The Time Of India: "I never wanted to get married. But I did want to become a bride. So I decided to marry myself."

She said she tried to look for other women who practice sologamy in India but couldn't find any.

"May be I am the first to set an example of self-love in India," said Bindu, who works at a private firm.

She also informed that her mother has given her consent for this unusual "groom-less" wedding.

Controversy:

Kshama's decision, however, earned the wrath of a BJP leader who had said that marrying oneself goes "against Hinduism".

BJP leader Sunita Shukla was quoted as saying by Deccan Herald: "I'm against the choice of venue, she'll not be allowed to marry herself in any temple. If anything goes against religion, then no law will prevail."
