Karnataka: Communal clashes break out in Kerur, Section 144 clamped
Bagalkot/UNI: Communal clashes broke out between two groups in Karnataka's Kerur over an eve-teasing incident.
As many as 18 people have been arrested and three people suffered injuries in the scuffle late Wednesday evening.
The police have imposed Section 144 in the area till Friday 8 pm to bring the tense situation under control.
The Bagalkot district administration also announced a holiday for schools and colleges in Kerur town as a preventive measure.
The clashes broke out after brothers Arun and Lakshman objected to the alleged eve-teasing of their sister by one Yasin.
Thereafter an altercation broke out resulting in Yasin gathering 10-15 of his people and attacking Arun and Lakhsman.
Reacting to this, Arun and Lakshman's friends and supporters rushed to the spot and attacked Yasin and his friends, resulting in a communal clash.
Later, violence broke out at Kerur market as culprits torched push carts and vandalised two-wheelers parked. Even Hindu Jagarana Vedike's members were reportedly involved in the clashes.
After receiving information about the violence, police rushed to the area to maintain law and order. They have registered FIRs pertaining to the clashes and arrested 18 people. The injured have been shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Earlier, Bagalkot Deputy Commissioner (DC) P Sunilkumar said they have detained people in connection with the incident and are interrogating them.
