Sonia Gandhi to appear before ED today, Congress says 'govt unleashing probe agencies on Opposition'
New Delhi/UNI: Lashing out at the BJP-led Centre ahead of party chief Sonia Gandhi's questioning by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the National Herald case, the Congress Thursday accused the Modi government of unleashing federal probe agencies on the Opposition and termed it a "dangerous" trend for the democracy.
Addressing a press conference, senior Congress leader and Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot said, "The way the BJP government is 'misusing' the Central probe agencies is a dangerous trend.
"The government is lowering the credibility of the ED and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) by pressurising them (officers). It is an attack on the Constitution of India.'
"Rattled by the Congress' Udaipur declaration, Narendra Modi and Amit Shah unleashed ED against Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in a false case. I condemn the questioning of Sonia Gandhi-ji.
"Why are they attacking the Gandhi family who sacrificed so much for the country? This family has the highest credibility even after 75 years," Gehlot said.
Claiming that the BJP considers the Opposition as its 'enemy', the senior Congress leader said, " They (Narendra Modi and Amit Shah) consider the Opposition as enemy. Earlier, they talked about 'Congress-mukt Bharat', now it is' Opposition-mukt Bharat'. We are heading towards dictatorship."
Attacking the ruling dispensation, Gehlot said, "Their laws apply differently to the Opposition and them and their allies. Those who join NDA, law changes for them.
"ED has become a 'tool' to topple elected governments."
He said the Congress will not bow down before the ruling dispensation and will continue its fight to save democracy.
Endorsing his party colleague, Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera attacking Modi and Shah said, "Whenever they feel cornered, they 'misuse' Central probe agencies. Their conspiracy is to silent us."
