BJP suspends Telangana MLA T Raja Singh over alleged remarks on Prophet Muhammad
Hyderabad/ New Delhi: BJP has suspended T Raja Singh, its Goshamahal constituency MLA, over his alleged derogatory comments on Prophet Muhammad last night that elicited strong protests in the city demanding action against him.
He has already been arrested in connection with the matter.
According to reports, in the video Singh mocked comedian Munawar Faruqui, whose show he unsuccessfully tried to disrupt recently.
He said his video was just a 'comedy' video just like Faruqui's alleged videos on Hindu gods. He asked, "Why the insult of Ram and Sita could pass off as comedy but not of other figures revered by other communities?"
Issuing the suspension notice, BJP central disciplinary committee member secretary Om Pathak, asked Singh to show cause by September 2 as to why he should not be expelled from the party.
"You have expressed views contrary to Party's position on various matters which is a clear violation of rule XXV. 10 (a) of constitution Bharatiya Janata Party," Pathak said in the letter addressed to Singh.
Singh was arrested after massive protests demanding action against him broke out in Hyderabad last night.
A case was filed under sections of the law related to the insult of religious beliefs.
"They removed my video from YouTube. I don't know what the police are going to do. Once I am released second part (of the video) will certainly be uploaded. I am doing it for Dharma. I am ready to die for Dharma," Singh said during his arrest, according to NDTV.
A huge crowd had gathered outside the Commissioner's office and several other places in the city, said the report, adding that the protesters were taken into custody and later shifted to various police stations.
Singh's controversial comments came just months after former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma triggered a massive backlash with her remarks on the Prophet.
Nupur Sharma was suspended by the BJP and as many as 10 cases were filed against her across the country.
