Bhopal: A three-and-a-half-year-old nursery student of a leading private school in Madhya Pradesh's capital Bhopal was allegedly raped by the school bus driver in the presence of a woman helper, who also tried to cover the crime, media reports said.

Both the driver and the female helper have been arrested.

The incident happened when the child was returning home in the school bus last Thursday, according to reports.

When she returned home, her mother noticed that she was wearing the spare set of clothes kept in her bag. She then asked the student's class teacher and the principal, but both denied having changed her clothes.

The incident came to light when the student's mother saw bruises on her body and asked the child how she got them.

The child also complained of pain in her genitals, after which her parents took her into confidence and counselled her.

After she related the incident to her mother, the parents approached the school authorities, who denied all allegations.

On Monday, the child's parents then informed the police, who arrested the driver under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act on charges of raping a minor. The helper was also arrested as she tried to hide the crime.

Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra said the school authorities will also be questioned as they tried to hide the crime and action will be taken against them if they are found guilty.
