Srinagar/UNI: Security forces gunned down a Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) militant in an ongoing encounter that erupted in Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir Tuesday evening, police said.

The gunfight broke out at the Ahwatoo area of Kulgam when joint teams of forces launched a cordon and a search operation (CASO) following input about militant presence.

“As the joint team of security forces reached a particular spot the hiding militants opened fire and the force men retaliated triggering an encounter during which a militant was killed," a police officer said.

“Two local terrorists of proscribed terror outfit JeM trapped in the ongoing encounter. Both trapped terrorists are involved in Several terror crime cases," Additional Director General of Police Kashmir (ADGP) Kashmir Vijay Kumar said in a tweet.

“01 terrorist killed. Operation in progress. Further details shall follow”, J&K Police tweet said.

This was the second encounter that erupted in the district during the past 24 hours.

On Monday a foreign Pakistani militant identified as Abu Hurairah of Jaish-e-Mohammad was killed and three people, including two civilians, were injured during an anti-militancy operation in the Batpora area of Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir.
