Police seize 218 kg of Ganja in Assam's Sonitpur

Guwahati: Police on Saturday seized 218 kg of Ganja from a four wheeler vehicle in Assam's Sontipur area.

Police said based on secret information, police set up a Naka checking at National Highway 15 near Khanamukh under Chariduar police station.

A senior police official of Sonitpur district told IBNS: "Today morning, at around 7-30 am, a white colour I20 vehicle bearing registration number AS-01BJ-0061, was intercepted coming from Tezpur side towards Lakhimpur side and the driver after seeing the police party drove away the vehicle towards Tezpur via Rangajan."

In order to stopped the vehicle, the police party chased the vehicle from behind.

Even after chased the same for about 15 km the vehicle did not stop, police said.

"Having no other way to stopped the vehicle police party control fired 2 rounds ammunition aiming to the wheel and subsequently front tyre was punctured and the vehicle was stopped at Boithabhanga area," the police official said.

However the driver of the vehicle fled away from the spot taking advantage of dense jungle.

During search the vehicle Police found 42 numbers of plastic packets having suspected Ganja weighing 218.136 kg and one Walkie Talkie set and seized the same on the spot as per NDPS procedure.

He also said that, the market value of the seized Ganja is estimated at around Rs 1.50 crore.

A case has been registered in this regard.
