West Bengal: Protesters block NH after mom, daughter killed in Howrah
Howrah: Hundreds of people on Saturday blocked the National Highway that links West Bengal with Tamil Nadu after an ambulance mowed down a middle aged woman and her 10-year-old daughter at Uluberia in Howrah district, official sources said.
The mob gathered on the highway and burnt tyres after Aparna Koley (35 ) and her daughter Pushu were hit by the speeding ambulance when they were waiting on the roadside to catch a bus for Bagnan.
Pushu was scheduled to appear for a scholarship examination in a primary school.
Immediately after the fatal accident at Jagatpur, the locals set fire to a car whose driver had abandoned it. The protest disrupted traffic on the highway.
As police officials rushed to the scene, the locals demanded an underpass in the area which is notorious for accidents.
On Friday, a woman was run over by a speeding car while two youths were wounded after being hit by a truck.
