Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir Police on Saturday arrested a man, apparently mentally unsound, on charges of committing sacrilege at a mosque in the old city here.
Police said the incident took place in Khan Masjid Gojwara at Nowhatta where a person threw the Holy Quran and some other items into water. This was caught on CCTV cameras.
A police statement said after a public outcry, Superintendent of Police Raja Zuhaib formed multiple teams to catch the culprit.
"Raids were conducted throughout the night and early today and the accused, Irshad Ahmad Mir, was arrested," the statement said.

A case under section 153A of the Indian Penal Code which penalises promotion of enmity between different groups on various grounds including religion was registered.
"Investigation showed the accused was involved in a similar incident earlier too. Prima facie the accused person seems to be of unsound mind."
