Kolkata/IBNS: Chinese Consul General in Kolkata Zha Liyou has said the Indian students, who returned to India during Covid-19, are slowly travelling back to China with the infection rates plummeting worldwide.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of an event in the city, Liyou said, "The young students want to go back to China. They have applied for visas."

He added, "The embassy, me and my colleague in Bombay are working very hard on this. Students are returning to China.

"During the last few weeks, my office has issued many visas for students who wish to go back to China. Some of them are already in China while others are choosing flights."

The direct flights between India and China were suspended following the Covid-19 outbreak and have not resumed since then.

However, the connecting flights through Dhaka, Colombo have resumed facilitating the students to return to China.

Liyou offered a restrained comment on the tension between the two Asian giants, who have been at loggerheads over border issues since 2020.

"As far as my office is concerned, I will say the situation is better and back to normal," Liyou said.
