New Delhi: Indian consular team is currently present in Pakistan to coordinate with the Sikh jatha (group of pilgrims) who are visiting the neighbouring nation to celebrate Guru Nanak's birthday.

"@IndiainPakistanconsular team is on the ground, with the Indian jatha visiting Pakistan for Gurupurab, coordinating with jatha leaders, local authorities for their safety, security and to facilitate their visit to various Gurdwaras in Pakistan@MEAIndia," the Indian consulate said in a statement.

To celebrate Parkash Purab (birth anniversary) of Guru Nanak Dev at Gurdwara Nankana Sahib, a 910-member ‘jatha’ of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) recently departed for Pakistan.

The SGPC had sent passports of 1,496 pilgrims for issuing visas to the Pakistan High Commission but applications of 586 pilgrims were rejected, which created resentment among devotees, reports The Tribune.

The leadership of this ‘jatha’ has been entrusted to former SGPC member Master Preet Singh, while SGPC officials Varinder Singh Tharu and Harpal Singh have been deputed for general management, the newspaper reported.
