Gurugram categorises 11 foreign dog breeds as 'dangerous', bans them

Gurugram: In the wake of several dog attacks in Gurugram, the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum Thursday directed the Municipal Corporation Gurugram (MCG) to ban 11 foreign dog breeds, media reports said.

The Gurugram Consumer Forum also ordered MCG to cancel their registration, take them into custody and keep all strays in pounds, India Today reported.

The orders were issued in the case of a woman, who suffered critical injuries after being bitten by a pet dog in Civil Lines on August 11.

The breeds that have been categorised as “dangerous foreign breeds” and banned include American Bulldogs, American Pit bull terriers, Dogo Argentino, Rottweiller, Boerboel, Presa Canario, Neapolitian Mastiff, Wolfdog, Cane Corso, Bandog and Fila Brasileiro, the report stated.

Dogo Argentino, which bit the woman, is known to have an unsteady temperament. It was first bred for big-game hunting in Argentina, said the India Today report.

According to Wikipedia, the Dogo Argentino is an intelligent and courageous dog with a strong, natural instinct to protect its home and family. The Dogo Argentino is a very social dog and are happiest when included in all family activities. However, the dog makes a strong distinction between familiar people and strangers, so it is imperative that it is well-trained and socialized at an early age. An unsteady temperament is a serious fault.

Many countries, including Denmark, Norway, Iceland, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and Turkey, have either banned or restricted ownership. In the UK laws prohibit owning a Dogo Argentino without lawful authority.

“The MCG is directed to cancel all the licence/s if any, issued in this regard in favour of the dog owners for keeping the above-cited pet dogs with immediate effect and take into its custody the aforesaid dogs immediately,” the forum said on November 15.

The Gurugram Consumer Forum has also ordered to pay of Rs 2 lakh as temporary relief for the woman.
