Kupwara: Three jawans of the Indian Army's 56 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) were killed on Friday in an avalanche that hit a patrol party at Kupwara's Machil sector in Jammu and Kashmir, media reports said.

The jawans, who were stuck under snow, were taken out and rushed to a military hospital for treatment, according to the Defence Public Relations Officer (PRO) in Srinagar.

One of the jawans developed hypothermia and died. The other two also succumbed to their injuries, the Defence PRO said.

The three jawans who died have been identified as Souvik Hajra, Mukesh Kumar and Gaikwad Manoj Laxman Rao.

Their mortal remains have been taken to the military hospital in Drugmulla.

Jammu and Kashmir's Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha took to Twitter to express his sorrow over the incident.

He wrote: "The nation will always be indebted to their supreme sacrifice."

The mortal remains of the deceased soldiers will be taken to their homes for last rites where they will be laid to rest with full military honours.
