New Delhi/UNI: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday announced the name of national Mahila Morcha president Rekha Gupta as its mayor candidate for the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).

The announcement was made a day after Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) announced its candidate for the mayor race.

Shelly Oberoi and Aaley Mohammad Iqbal of AAP will be contesting for the post of Delhi Mayor and Deputy Mayor respectively. Both have filed their nominations for the polls.

Talking to UNI, BJP’s MCD election in charge Ashish Sood, said the party is fulfilling its democratic rights by fielding the candidates for the Mayor elections.

He also expressed confidence that the elected councillors will choose Rekha Gupta for the post because of her long experience in the MCD.

"BJP's vote share has increased in the MCD polls, and we are prepared for the development work of Delhi's citizens," he said.

Rekha Gupta was elected from Shalimar Bagh and was a two-time councillor from North Pitampura (Ward 54) from 2007 to 2014.

She has also been a member of the BJP national executive and general secretary of Delhi BJP.

The BJP also nominated Kamal Bagadi, who was elected from Ram Nagar ward, for the deputy mayor post.

The mayor polls will be held on January 6.

On Monday, the BJP said it would contest all posts for the MCD House and give “tough” competition to its rival AAP.

In the recent conclusion, MCD elections, AAP won the MCD polls with a majority of 134 seats, BJP has 105 seats and Congress has nine.
