Delhi woman dragged by car: Amit Shah asks top cop to probe case, FIR says men inside vehicle were drunk

New Delhi/IBNS: Union Home Minister Amit Shah Monday took note of the shocking case of the Delhi woman who died after being dragged by a car for over an hour on New Year's morning and directed senior Delhi Police officer Shalini Singh to probe the same.

The Union Home Ministry has directed Shalini Singh to submit a report regarding the investigation as soon as possible, reports said.

The victim, a 20-year-old woman, was dragged through a stretch of 10-12 km after her scooty was hit by a car in the national capital.

Her body got tangled in the undercarriage, which, the occupants claim they had not noticed.

The men, who were in the car, had confessed to their friend that they were drunk, as per the First Information Report filed by the Delhi Police.

After hitting the woman, who fell from the scooty, they apparently panicked and were trying to make a getaway, the FIR said.

The car in which they were driving was twice-borrowed, the police have found.

The owner, Lokesh, had loaned it to Ashutosh, who loaned it to his friends Amit and Deepak Khanna.

The Khannas were inside the car when the horrific events took place shortly after midnight on New Year.

Earlier in the day, the National Commission for Women has written to the Delhi Police Commissioner over the horrific incident.

NCW tweeted: "@NCWIndia has taken cognizance of the reported crime. Chairperson @sharmarekha has written to @CPDelhi to conduct a fair & time-bound investigation in the matter."

"NCW has also sought that the victim's post mortem must be conducted to ascertain whether the victim was sexually assaulted or not and to invoke relevant provisions in the FIR if allegations levelled by victim's mother are found to be true," the commission tweeted.

According to Delhi Police special commissioner (law and order, zone 1) Deependra Pathak, a distress call was received by the Kanjhawala Police Station in Rohini at around 3.20 am about a body being dragged by a grey coloured Maruti Baleno heading to Qutubgarh, reports Hindustan Times.

On receiving a call about the woman's body lying on the Kanjhawala main road, a police team rushed to the spot at around 4.11 am. The cops found the woman's body without clothes and with broken limbs, leading to suspicion that she was sexually assaulted and murdered.

Delhi Lieutenant governor VK Saxena has expressed 'shock' over the incident.

"My head hangs in shame over the inhuman crime in Kanjhawla-Sultanpuri today morning and I am shocked at the monstrous insensitivity of the perpetrators. Have been monitoring with @CPDelhi and the accused have been apprehended. All aspects are being thoroughly looked into."
