ISF workers clash with Kolkata Police, several hurt
Kolkata: Several people were hurt as clashes broke out between Kolkata Police and Indian Secular Front (ISF) workers in Kolkata on Saturday.
The clash occurred following the arrest of ISF legislator Naushad Siddiqui.
The Indian Secular Front is a political party formed in West Bengal by Abbas Siddiqui, an influential cleric of the shrine of Furfura Sharif in Hooghly district. It had fought against the ruling Trinamool Congress as an ally of the Left and Congress in the last state election.
Police resorted to lathi charge and lobbed tear gas shells to disperse the crowd.
“At least 17 persons, including Siddiqui, were arrested. Police had to use mild force and fire tear gas shells to bring situations under control,” Vineet Goyal, Kolkata police commissioner, told Hindustan Times.
“Around 19 police personnel, including three senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officers, were injured,” he added.
