Dorsey’s distortions and India’s firm stance against global misinformation

| @indiablooms | 14 Jun 2023, 06:19 pm

As the great Indian freedom fighter Mahatma Gandhi once said, “Truth is the most powerful weapon.” In the age of information, we stand at a crucial juncture, teetering between truth and falsehood, fact and fiction.

And in this vortex, the recent statements by Jack Dorsey, the former CEO of Twitter, have added fuel to an already blazing fire.

The allegations that the Indian government has pressured Twitter to ‘block’ certain accounts or censor content on the platform are grave in their implications. However, when delving deeper into the narrative that Dorsey has woven, it becomes apparent that his comments lack substance, context, and respect for the sovereignty of nations.

The Indian Union Minister of State for Electronics & Technology, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, has rightly termed these allegations as an ‘outright lie’. The truth, as it stands, is that Twitter, under Dorsey, was in continuous violation of Indian law. This is not a matter of opinion but a matter of public record, with instances of non-compliance stretching from 2020 to 2022. The platform only complied in June 2022, and contrary to Dorsey’s implications, no one was sent to jail, and Twitter was not shut down in India.

The regulation of internet content is not a concept unique to India. Governments worldwide exercise this power to protect their citizens from the perils of misinformation, hate speech, and other harmful online practices. For instance, the Government of Canada has made 214 requests to social media companies to censor certain online content. The question here is not whether governments should regulate online content but how they can do so responsibly and transparently. So why is India singled out in this global dialogue?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit the U.S. soon, a visit that will shape the geopolitical conditions of the Indo-Pacific. It is at this crucial juncture that Dorsey’s statements have surfaced, casting aspersions on India’s regulatory practices. It is hard not to see a pattern and ask: is Dorsey being used as a pawn in a larger game aimed at undermining the rule-based global order and democracy?

It’s worth noting that amidst all this controversy, Jack Dorsey has been working on a new venture, Bluesky Social, a platform described as being “Twitter-like”. Could it be that these statements are merely a part of a larger public relations strategy to draw attention to his new endeavour? The timing of these allegations is intriguing, to say the least. Not only do they coincide with the crucial visit of Prime Minister Modi to the U.S., but they also come at a time when Dorsey is venturing into new territories in the social media landscape.

Dorsey’s statements, unfortunately, do not contribute to this constructive dialogue. They serve only to malign the Indian government on the global stage and distract from the vital issues at hand. It is essential, now more than ever, that we discern the truth from the noise and stand united against efforts that threaten our democratic values and our global order.

India, a nation with a rich history of upholding truth and justice, will not be swayed by such tactics. We continue to walk on the path of truth, integrity, and respect for the rule of law – the pillars that have sustained our democracy for over 70 years. We remain committed to the principles of transparency, accountability, and the right to free speech, as long as it respects the laws of the land and contributes to the welfare of our society.

In the end, the truth will always prevail. As we navigate through the stormy seas of misinformation, we must hold on to our compass – the truth. Only then can we chart a course towards a more informed, inclusive, and democratic future.
