Kolkata: Newly elected Trinamool Congress panchayat member Moimur Gharami, alias Moyna, was lynched to death after a gunshot from the miscreants missed the target, which hit his companion, in front of his house at Magrahat in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district, police said on Saturday.

A companion, identified as Sajimul Mollah, was admitted to the Diamond Harbour Hospital with a hand injury.

The panchayat member was declared dead on arrival at the government hospital in the district.

The police arrested four suspects in the brutal murder.

Sources said a land dispute led to the murder of the TMC leader.
