Madhya Pradesh: Accused in Ujjain minor rape injured while attempting to flee police
Ujjain: The auto-driver who was arrested for allegedly raping a 12-year-old girl in Madhya Pradesh's Ujjain tried to escape when police took him to recreate the crime at the crime site, media reports said.
The auto-driver, identified as Bharat Soni, was nabbed earlier on Thursday while three others were held.
He got injured as he attempted to escape from the police, the report said citing sources.
Inspector Ajay Kumar from Mahakal Police Station in Ujjain reported that Bharat Soni incurred injuries to his arms and legs while attempting to flee from the authorities present at the crime scene.
"Today, we reached the spot to recreate the scene of the crime and recover the clothes worn by the girl. Sensing an opportunity, Bharat Soni tried to escape. Police personnel chased him and caught him. During this, he fell on the cement road and received injuries to his arms and legs," Kumar was quoted as saying by India Today.
The Superintendent of Ujjain Police stated that Soni resisted the police officials present at the location and attempted to escape. In the scuffle, two police officials also sustained injuries. Bharat Soni is currently undergoing treatment at the Civil Hospital in Ujjain.
According to the report, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said Bharat Soni would be given the "strictest punishment". "We will leave no stone unturned in getting him punished...Such criminals are not fit to be a part of society. He has injured the soul of Madhya Pradesh. She is my daughter, daughter of Madhya Pradesh. We will care about her," he added.
Police said the girl belonged to Satna and came to Ujjain in an auto at Jeevan Kheri.
The passenger seat of the autorickshaw had blood stains and a forensic examination of the vehicle has been initiated, according to the report.
The police stated that another auto driver will face charges for failing to report the incident to the authorities, it added.
An FIR was registered at the Mahakal Police Station after a video of the girl wandering helplessly on the streets of Ujjain semi-naked and bleeding went viral on social media.
