Bengal BJP workers stage protest outside party headquarters in Kolkata
Kolkata/IBNS: In an embarrassment for West Bengal's primary opposition camp Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), some of its workers staged a protest against the top brass outside party headquarters in Kolkata on Thursday.
In some visuals, angry workers were seen protesting against the top brass, kicking the posters of state president Sukanta Majumdar and others outside BJP headquarters near MG Road, which is close to central Kolkata.
This is the second consecutive day where BJP faced embarrassment as some workers even protested outside the party's Salt Lake office on Wednesday.
One of the protesters on Thursday claimed, "After Anubrata Mondal went to jail, the BJP state leadership is benefitting from a hefty amount of royalty."
Admitting it as a discomfort for the party, BJP state chief spokesperson Samik Bhattacharya told a regional news channel, "The incident is unfortunate and not desirable. There might be some communication gap and BJP as a disciplined party will sort it out."
"But the incident has undoubtedly created discomfort for us," Bhattacharya added.
BJP, which had a meteoric rise in West Bengal politics in 2019 winning 18 of 42 Lok Sabha seats, failed to defeat Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress in the assembly elections which were held two years later.
Despite giving a call to win 200 assembly seats, the party, which has never ruled the state, stopped at 77, the figure which helped them to secure the opposition bench in the assembly.
With a few months left for the next General Elections, the protests have once again raised questions on BJP's political base in the state considering its poor run in several byelections which were mostly won by the ruling party.
