'Deeply moved': Israel's Ambassador to India Naor Gilon thanks Indians for support during India-Pak World Cup match

New Delhi: India extended its clean record against Pakistan in the ODI World Cup history with a seven-wicket victory in Ahmedabad on Saturday. Several Indian cricket fans used the widely-watched event to air their support for Israel which has launched an intense counteroffensive against Palestinian terrorist group Hamas.

Israeli Ambassador to India Naor Gilon expressed his gratitude for the support shown by several Indians, who displayed posters during the match to demonstrate their solidarity with Israel.

Gilon shared his sentiments on the microblogging platform X, formerly Twitter, emphasising that India's victory was significant, and Pakistan couldn't attribute it to the Hamas terrorists.

He also shared images of a man holding a poster reading "India Stands With Israel In War Against Terrorism".

Recently, Pakistan's wicketkeeper-batsman Muhammad Rizwan credited his team's win against Sri Lanka in an ODI World Cup match on October 10 to the support from "brothers and sisters in Gaza".

Earlier, Israeli Ambassador Naor Gilon expressed gratitude for India's support and mentioned that so many Indians volunteered to help Israel that they could almost constitute an additional unit of the Israel Defence Force.

He also praised PM Modi for swiftly and unequivocally condemning the terror attack, noting him as one of the first global leaders to do so.

Speaking to ANI about the support from India, the Ambassador said, "For me, it's the point of optimism. It's very emotional. The level of support that we got, from the Prime Minister, on the same day on Saturday when the whole picture was not clear. Among the first leaders, who came out and tweeted very clear condemnation. We will never forget that".

"This is very very important. After speaking with PM Netanyahu, Modiji had another strong tweet. I got calls from Minister... who said 'We are with you'. High officials here, big businessmen here... offering any kind of help," he added.

The Envoy further expressed gratitude to the Indian people for their support, underscoring that India-Israel relations are very "deep and emotional".

"This is only part of the picture, regular Indians. Look at the social media of the embassy. It's amazing, I think I could have another IDF with the volunteers. Everyone is telling me, I want to volunteer, I want to fight for Israel," he added.
