A rowdy-sheeter was arrested after the police opened fire on him in self-defence, when he attacked a Cop at Salapatti village in Thottiyam of Tiruchirapalli district on Friday night.

Police said here on Saturday that acting on specific information that K.Alexander (29), a notorious rowdy sheeter against whom several cases including murder, robbery, assault was hiding under the foothills of a hillock with country-made weapons, a police team led by Thottiyam police inspector Muthaiyan went to nab him.

When the police asked him to surrender, he hurled a stone injuring a police constable.

Muthaiyan fired two rounds from his service pistol in self-defence. Alexander suffered bullet injuries on his leg.

The rowdy-sheeter was later arrested and admitted to the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital.

The injured police constable was also admitted to the hospital.

Police recovered country-made weapons from Alexander and are investigating.
