Pune/IBNS: The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has built a fully indigenous assault rifle, named Urgram, in only 100 days, media reports said.

The rifle, which is of 7.62 x 51mm calibre, was built in collaboration with a private industry partner.

Dr SV Gade, Director-General of Armament and Combat Engineering Cluster, unveiled the rifle here on January 8.

It aims to meet the requirements of the Armed Forces, Paramilitary units and state police, Moneycontrol reported.

A Raju, director of Armament Research and Development Establishments (ARDE), told The Indian Express, "This was a mission-mode project taken up two years ago. After the ARDE designed the rifle, we started looking for a private industry partner for development and manufacturing."

"We have followed the concept of Development cum Production Partner, DcPP for the speedy progress of the project. Under this, the vendor is associated with us during the design and production too. After the product is made by the vendor, it will undergo acceptance trials. We placed the order for the assault rifle to the Hyderabad-based Dvipa Armour. The rifle will soon go for trials," he added.

The rifle will now slip into the trial mode where its operation capability will be tested under different conditions like extreme heat, harsh winter and underwater.
