BJP defeats AAP-Congress in Chandigarh Mayoral Elections in setback for INDIA bloc

Chandigarh/IBNS: In its first contest against the opposition alliance INDIA, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday won the Chandigarh Mayoral Elections defeating the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Congress, media reports said.

AAP had fielded Kuldeep Kumar for the Mayoral post against BJP's Manoj Sonkar, who won the contest.

The BJP won 16 of 35 seats while eight votes were declared invalid.

In the alliance, the Congress had fielded its candidates for the Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor's elections.

The election result comes just a day after Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar quit the INDIA alliance and returned to the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and days after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee cleared she will fight alone in her state in the upcoming General Elections.

Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said AAP will go solo in his state in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
