Opposition Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader Kanti Ganguly's organization for physically challenged people, 'West Bengal Pratibandhi Sammilani' (WBPS), had called a law violation programme on Monday for a few demands.
A huge number of handicapped people had joined the programme.
A heavy security arrangement was made by the Kolkata Police to avoid any unwanted situation. Two deputy commissioners of Kolkata Police (DC-South and DC-Special Task Force) were deployed at the spot.
Making three tier barricades, policemen were waiting at the end of Rani Rasmoni Avenue in Kolkata's Esplanade area. But suddenly the protesters changed their route and started law violation at the crossing of Rani Rashmoni Avenue and Indira Gandhi Sarani.
Police later brought the situation under control but some protesters and one policeman were injured .
Special Additional and Joint Commissioner of Kolkata Police (Headquarters) Rajeeb Mishra told IBNS that 200 protesters, including CPI-M leader Kanti Ganguly, were arrested from the spot and were released later.
