Hope everyone's rights are protected in India: UN on Delhi Arvind Kejriwal’s arrest
Reacting to the question on political unrest in India following the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and the freezing of the Congress party's bank accounts, the United Nations expressed hope that everyone's rights are protected in India.
“What we very much hope that in India, as in any country that is having elections, that everyone's rights are protected, including political and civil rights,” Stephane Dujarric, the spokesperson for Secretary-General of United Nations Antonio Guterres, made these comments while responding to a question during a press briefing on Thursday.
He further expressed hope that everyone would be able to vote in an atmosphere that is free and fair.
This statement comes days after India summoned senior diplomats from the US and German embassies in New Delhi following their countries' concerns over the arrest of Arvind Kejriwal ahead of the elections.
