Kathua shootout: Injured Jammu and Kashmir cop succumbs, gangster dead

Jammu/UNI: A Probationary Sub Inspector (PSI) of Jammu and Kashmir Police, who was critically injured in last evening's shootout with gangsters in Kathua district, succumbed to his injuries at a hospital, police said on Wednesday.

One special police officer is also hospitalised while one of the gangsters was killed in the incident.

A police spokesman on Wednesday morning said that on Tuesday night at about 2235 hours, a firing incident occurred between police and gangsters near Government Medical College Kathua, in which one PSI Deepak Sharma, 32, presently posted at Police Station Ramgarh, received head injuries, and SPO Anil Kumar, 40, also posted at Ramgarh, district Samba, got injured during the firing incident.

A gangster died in the shootout, the spokesman said, adding that the injured police officer who was shifted from GMC Kathua to Amandeep Hospital, Pathankot, succumbed to his injuries Wednesday morning during treatment, and his body was shifted to GMC Kathua.

PSI Deepak Sharma was a resident of Sangoor in Udhampur district.

The wreath laying ceremony of Sharma will be held at the District Police Lines Samba.
