The district police in Hoshiarpur region of Punjab have apprehended a man suspected of espionage for the Pakistani intelligence agency ISI, according to police sources on Friday.

Acting on a tip-off, the Model Town police arrested Harpreet Singh, also known as Pastor Johnson, from Fatehpur Sugga in Tarn Taran district, Indian news agency UNI reported.

Singh has been residing in Vijay Nagar here, near the local rail-road crossing on Phagwara road, from where he was picked up last night.

The police recovered a bag containing an Aadhar card, a Labour Card, a Passport, some Indian currency, and a mobile phone from the suspect.

Sources told UNI that Harpreet Singh, who has been living here for the past four years, had travelled to Pakistan twice on a visitor visa, where he allegedly met with officials from the Pakistani intelligence agency.

He was in contact with these officials via WhatsApp.

It is alleged that he procured Indian SIM cards using false documents and facilitated the Pakistani agency officials in using WhatsApp and other internet applications through these SIM cards to organise anti-India activities.

The police sources told UNI that he was accused of aiding anti-India activities by providing sensitive information about Indian Army deployments, locations, and recruitment procedures, as well as transmitting documents and photos via his mobile phone.

He has been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, the Information Technology Act, and the Official Secrets Act, 1923 in FIR No. 98.

The interrogation of the suspect is ongoing, and further disclosures will be made by the police later-on, stated the authorities.
