EC bars BJP's Tamluk candidate Abhijit Ganguly from campaigning for 24 hours over objectionable remarks against Mamata Banerjee
Kolkata/IBNS: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has barred Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s candidate from Tamluk Lok Sabha constituency in West Bengal, former Calcutta High Court judge Abhijit Ganguly, from campaigning for 24 hours, media reports said.
Ganguly has been barred from campaigning for 24 hours starting from 5 pm on Tuesday over his objectionable remarks against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
The Election Commission has warned Ganguly to be careful of his words during the Model Code of Conduct (MCC).
In reference to the Sandeshkhali incident, Ganguly days ago had said, "They say Rekha Patra (BJP's Sandeshkhali candidate) was bought for Rs. 2,000. Mamata Banerjee, what is your price?..."
Ganguly, who delivered crucial judgements in uncovering the teachers' recruitment scam in the state, was slammed by the TMC after he joined the BJP quitting his judiciary responsibilities.
The TMC claims Ganguly's judgements, which went against the TMC government, were biased in favour of the BJP.
Ganguly is pitted against TMC's youth leader Debangshu Bhattacharya from Tamluk, a stronghold of Leader of Opposition and BJP MLA Suvendu Adhikari.
Tamluk will go to polls in the sixth phase of Lok Sabha elections on May 25.
