Thane fire update: 7 killed, 40 injured in explosion fire at chemical factory

Thane (Maharashtra): Several people are feared trapped inside a factory after a fire broke out at the unit in Thane's Dombivli near Mumbai following a massive blast on Thursday, media reported.

At least seven people have been killed in the incident, with over 40 others sustaining injuries in the massive explosion, reported NDTV.

The fire erupted after a boiler inside the chemical factory, situated in MIDC Phase 2, exploded, according to officials.

Witnesses recounted hearing three blasts emanating from the factory. Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister confirmed that at least eight individuals have been rescued from the site.

"The incident of a boiler explosion at Amudan Chemical Company in Dombivli MIDC is tragic. Eight people involved in this incident have been rescued. Arrangements have been made to treat the injured and more ambulances have been kept ready. I have discussed this with the collector and they are reaching the spot within 10 minutes. Teams of NDRF, TDRF, and fire brigade have been called," Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said, according to the report.

"I pray to God for the speedy recovery of the injured," he added.

The explosion's force created a large crater at the site, while the shockwaves from the blast caused damage to nearby factories and shattered glass windows in the vicinity.

The shockwave and intense heat generated by the boiler blast resulted in heavy iron beams bending, while the roofs of neighbouring factories were blown off, leading to extensive damage.

The explosion's sound reverberated up to a kilometer away, and a Sai Temple near the blast site bore the brunt of the shockwaves.

Despite several devotees being inside the temple engaged in a ritual, they were able to evacuate to safety.

According to reports, some people are trapped and rescue teams are using drones to locate them.

Around 15 engines were pressed into action to douse the inferno and the operation is underway.

Officials estimate that it will take over four hours to fully extinguish the fire. The force of the blast shattered windows in nearby houses. The fire has spread to two other buildings, including a car showroom.

A distress call was received around 1:40 pm. Preliminary reports indicate that several vehicles and houses have been damaged in the explosion, with at least seven people reported injured.
