ECI asks Congress leader Jairam Ramesh to back his claim about attempt to influence DMs by 7 pm today

New Delhi/IBNS: The Election Commission of India has set 7 pm as the deadline for Congress leader Jairam Ramesh to back his allegation that Union Home Minister Amit Shah called 150 DMs (district magistrates) and collectors in an attempt to influence them ahead of the counting of votes of Lok Sabha elections on June 4.

The ECI has rejected Ramesh's plea seeking an extension of time by a week to substantiate his claims.

ECI senior principal secretary Narendra N Butolia said, "Your allegation that attempts have been made to influence the District Magistrates of around 150 Parliamentary Constituencies, who are also the ROs/DEOs (Returning Officers/District Election Officers), has serious connotation and direct bearing on the sanctity of the counting process, scheduled for tomorrow.

"As mentioned in Commissions letter dated 02..06.2024, no DM has reported any such undue influence as alleged by you. Therefore, the Commission hereby outrightly rejects your request for time extension."

Ramesh clarified that he did not accuse ECI but requested the poll body to safeguard against such "malpractices".

The results of the 7-phase Lok Sabha elections, which ended on June 1, will be declared on Tuesday.
